Heating Hot Atmospheres with Active Galactic Nuclei

چکیده
High resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the hot gas in galaxy clusters has shown that the gas is not cooling to low temperatures at the predicted rates of hundreds to thousands of solar masses per year. X-ray images have revealed giant cavities and shock fronts in the hot gas that provide a direct and relatively reliable means of measuring the energy injected into hot atmospheres by active galactic nuclei (AGN). Average radio jet powers are near those required to offset radiative losses and to suppress cooling in isolated giant elliptical galaxies, and in larger systems up to the richest galaxy clusters. This coincidence suggests that heating and cooling are coupled by feedback, which suppresses star formation and the growth of luminous galaxies. How jet energy is converted to heat and the degree to which other heating mechanisms are contributing, eg. thermal conduction, are not well understood. Outburst energies require substantial late growth of supermassive black holes. Unless all of the ∼ 10 erg required to suppress star formation is deposited in the cooling regions of clusters, AGN outbursts must alter large-scale properties of the intracluster medium.

Radio Mode Outbursts in Giant Elliptical Galaxies
Outbursts from active galactic nuclei (AGN) affect the hot atmospheres of isolated giant elliptical galaxies (gE’s), as well as those in groups and clusters of galaxies. Chandra observations of a sample of nearby gE’s show that the average power of AGN outbursts is sufficient to stop their hot atmospheres from cooling and forming stars, consistent with radio mode feedback models. The outbursts ...
متن کاملSelf-Regulated AGN Heating in Elliptical Galaxies
We study the effect of active galactic nuclei (AGN) heating on the chemodynamical evolution of elliptical galaxies and their X-ray and optical properties using highresolution Λ-dominated cold dark matter cosmological simulations. Our model considers an AGN as being “active” when a convergent gas inflow condition exists within a galaxy’s nucleus; otherwise, the AGN is assumed to remain dormant. ...
متن کاملTesting the X-ray variability of active galactic nuclei with the nonlinear prediction method
The analysis of eight EXOSAT X-ray lightcurves of six active galactic nuclei by nonlinear prediction methods indicates that the observed variability is truly stochastic and is not caused by deterministic chaos. This result favors X-ray emission models with mutliple centers of production of hot, possibly relativistic electrons.
متن کاملHydrodynamical simulations of cluster formation with central AGN heating
We analyse a hydrodynamical simulation model for the recurrent heating of the central intracluster medium (ICM) by active galactic nuclei (AGN). Besides self-gravity of a dark matter and a gas component, our approach includes radiative cooling and photo-heating of the gas, as well as a subresolution multiphase model for star formation and SNe feedback. Additionally, we incorporate a periodic he...
متن کاملX-ray Emissions from Three-dimensional Magnetohydrodynamic Coronal Accretion Flows
We calculate the radiation spectrum and its time variability of the black hole accretion disk-corona system based on the three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulation. In explaining the spectral properties of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), it is often assumed that they consist of a geometrically thin, optically thick disk and hot, optically thin corona surrounding the thin disk. As for a mod...
